Osteopathy During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is one of the most exciting journeys anyone can experience and at Back to Back we want to help families make the journey as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

The changes to the body in pregnancy involve hormonal, mechanical, emotional and psychological changes, as well as every system altering its space and function (respiratory, cardiovascular, digestion, bladder, bowel). All of these systems are related and all work better when the body is in a state of optimal symmetry and ease. It is essential that this relationship between structure and function is addressed.

Research has shown reduced labour times, pain and instrumental intervention in births where mothers to be have utilised osteopathic treatment beforehand.

Typically, problems during pregnancy are low back pain, pelvic and pubic pain, and ligament issues, along with other upper back and neck pain from accommodating mechanical posture changes.

A lot of the complaints that arise from the uterus expanding to accommodate the foetus do resolve after delivery, but those that could be exacerbated by cuddling, feeding and lifting postures (and reduced sleep) do need to be treated afterwards to keep mother, baby and the rest of the family happy and functioning as best as they can.

If any discomfort is felt during any of the stages of your pregnancy, please get in touch with the team today. The Back to Back clinic welcomes any family members to the appointment and the treatment can be worked around baby’s sleeping or feeding times and playtime for older children.

Wonderful experience at Back to Back - only wish I’d started seeing Stephanie sooner! I started seeing her at 32 weeks pregnant, having been experiencing pelvic girdle pain and back pain since 12 weeks. Within 3 weeks I was moving normally again, and now at 5 weeks on the pain has almost completely subsided. Stephanie has also taught me some brilliant active stretches to keep everything mobilised in the long run. Thank you so much for the support, which has totally transformed my experience of pregnancy!
